White Skin of the Black Market: Women in Cages!

 »Women in Cages« is an exploitation flick from 1971, produced by the legendary Roger Corman. This illustration, based on the movie, was done for the DVD Label Subkultur Entertainment and their line of retro-style hardbox editions. Playing around in Photoshop I created a bogus poster design using the copy/taglines of the original release poster. The illustration was painted in acrylics on paper, 2012.

Glenn Stange as.....

Guess who?! I recently rediscoverd oil paints (this time water souble) and this is one of the results. I love them, but the drying time kills me, I have more finished, but I can't put them on the scanner yet! Note to self: Get rid of the cheap brushes. Oil on paper, (2012).

DINOSAURUS!

 

Recently done: A retro-style illustration for the 60ties Matinee classic »Dinosaurus!« by Irwin S. Yeaworth.

Inspired by the works of Klaus Dill and other German movie poster artists of the 50ties and 60ties I went for a more stylized, "graphic" approach, with bold, black outlines and screaming colors. For the (fun) version above I reused and tweaked the typography from the original US one-sheet poster. 

The actual illustration was used for Subkultur Entertainment's line of limited retro hard box re-packages, celebrating the good ol' VHS rental aesthetics. Grab it while you can, it's limited to 150 units only!

News from the Black Bat....

After over two years my last Black Bat / Schwarze Fledermaus painting finally made it on the cover of Vol. 3 »Die Falle« by A.S. Jones. I'm not so thrilled how they placed the title copy, so here is the unaltered illustration :

As promised! Vincent Price in a non-horror part, but evil one indeed: As Baka, the Master Builder from Cecil B. DeMille's »The 10 Commandments« (1956). Brush, ink, Copic markers, colored pencils and white out.

Peter Cushing....

... would have been 98 years old today. Happy Birthday Sir Peter, wherever you are!

Barrymore's Mister Hyde by Dedham Pond Designs

»Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde« (1920) starring John Barrymore is most celebrated silent screen version of Stevensons classic tale. Dedham Pond Designs released an very nice interpretation of Mr. Hyde based on Barrymores performance. Sculpted by Joe Simon und with boxart by yours truly. The build up used on the box art was done by Charlie Coleman. Thanks to Todd Powell for giving me the opportunity to paint this human wreck! The model is 1/8 scale and cast in resin, easy to assemble and tricky to paint (if you want to match the fancy morning coat Barrymore wore in this scene from the movie). Welten des Schreckens / Worlds of Terror

Now the cat's out of the bag, here is the new cover for a new German Comic Book: Welten des Schreckens (Worlds of Terror).

Here is the Editor's press release (sorry, only available in German):

"Nachdem Charon, der finstere Fährmann, uns schon seit nahezu zwanzig Ausgaben mit hammerharten Horrorschockern versorgt, haben sich bei uns noch zwei andere ehrenwerte Gestalten aus mythischer Vorzeit eingefunden, um den nach Unterhaltung lechzenden WEISSBLECH-Lesern extralange und extrafantastische Geschichten zu bringen: Scylla und Charibdis haben ihre Monsterhöhle verlassen und teilen uns ihre Visionen mit - Visionen aus Welten der Fantasy, der Zukunft und aus Welten fern der unseren ... Visionen aus WELTEN des SCHRECKENS!

Geplant sind vorerst zwei Ausgaben jährlich, ein Vierer-Abo wird 30,- € kosten.Vorraussichtlicher Erscheinungstermin der ersten Ausgabe ist so etwa August! WELTEN des SCHRECKENS wird im Comicfachhandel, im Bahnhofsbuchhandel und (per Bestellung) wohl auch im Buchhandel zu haben sein!"

The Black Bat...returns.

This is my second, brand new rendition of the 30's Pulp hero "The Black Bat" from the magazine "Black Book Detective". I used a model kit of Batman by Argentinian sculptor Alterton for lightning reference. Staying away from illustrating a certain scene from any of the stories seemed a good idea. I realized that a more generic, but moody scenery shows the essence of this mysterious character best. A third one is in the making.....  Acrylics on board, 2009.
